This feature is required for AA0.5 to reduce the required number of network switches and QSFP cables which need to be procured by half. This is a significant cost saving.

Transmission of all TPM data products over a single 40G port is demonstrated. The active port of each TPM (top or bottom or both) is configurable through software.

Changes to the Tile architecture have been made, as described on Confluence.

The firmware changes were verified through VUnit test benches and testing on version 1.2, 1.6 and 2.0 tile hardware.

Changes to the control software in MCCS were also made to provide appropriate configuration support. This ticket is currently still open, awaiting AAVS3 time for verification.

    Description

Current FPGA firmware uses both 40G ports of a TPM to transmit data to the switch. The FPGA firmware can be modified to use a single 40G port, saving a substantial amount on cables and switch ports. Relevant work on this feature has been carried in PI-12 for SP-1721, however it was not been tested on real hardware due to hardware availability. Subsequent work to rearchitect and reimplement the work into the current firmware, now hardware is available, was carried out in PI 20 for SP-3697 and is documented here: https://confluence.skatelescope.org/x/_68QDg This work was not able to be completed in PI 20 and requires debugging and thorough testing on hardware to verify the correct operation.
