The ability to simulate the SKA1 LOW polarisation response is a important enabler towards understanding the requirements and error model to address the L1 polarisation dynamic range requirement. Starting upon a roadmap towards analysis of this requirement is required to satisfy the system-CDR report and to enable future work on SDP workflows.

    Description

Following the recommendation in the system-CDR report that the SKA devise and document a plan for achieving high polarisation dynamic range (45 dB for LOW), we need to begin work to progress the analysis of the SKA1 polarisation performance though simulation.

To this aim, would like to address the following questions:

      1. What is the (uncorrected) polarisation response as a function of position in the field to an unpolarised source?
      2. How does this depend on antenna type?
      3. How does this depend on the station randomisation scheme?
      4. Stretch: What is the correct error model for off-axis polarisation and how can we correct for it?

Stretch: In order to enable future work, we will need to be able to generate SKA1-Low simulations with Faraday rotation using an ionospheric model that takes into account of a geomagnetic model so this functionality should be developed and added to simulation tools and/or scripts.
