Characterisation of the polarisation performance of SKA1-MID by simulation, is an important enabler towards addressing the recommendation made by the system CDR panel that we establish a plan to achieve (or better understand) the L1 polarisation dynamic range requirement.

To be discussed and negotiated with Robert Laing at PI planning.

      Initial suggestion:

      • Produce scripts and data set of polarised simulation of SKA1-MID using a perfect model of the dish behaviour (including elevation deformation etc)
      • Initial assessment of if A-projection (or equivalent) can be used to correct for the off-axis polarisation response over a reasonable fraction of the primary beam given perfect knowledge of the beam model.

      Stretch:

      1. Initial assessment of the additional error introduced if a beam correction (A-projection) or equivalent is performed with a non-perfect model of the beam (eg using a nominal 45 deg elevation beam)
      2. Obtaining and report on experience from MeerKAT on how well holography compared to the finite element modelling.

    Description

Needed to support system-CDR closeout. This ticket should therefore be viewed as a short very high priority time-boxed activity to provide required inputs for system CDR closeout, followed by a longer term lower priority activity to begin work toward developing the tools and simulation capability to perform an assessment of the expected polarisation performance of SKA1-MID.

Following the recommendation in the system-CDR report that the SKA devise and document a plan for achieving high polarisation dynamic range (40 dB for MID), we need to begin work to progress the analysis of the SKA1 polarisation performance though simulation.

To this aim, would like to address the following questions:

      1. Assuming a simulation of SKA1-Mid with a perfect model of the dish behaviour (as a function of elevation), can we correct the off-axis polarisation response using A-projection or equivalent over a reasonable fraction of the Primary Beam?
      2. If we no longer have a perfect model of the beam available for correction, what is the additional error introduced?

Stretch: Obtaining and report on experience from MeerKAT on how well holography compared to the finite element modelling.
