PI21-PB Software_Sharing
Description
CVMFS provides a software distribution service able to deploy software on a globally distributed computing infrastructure. Unlike container registries (which are only able to distribute containers) CVMFS is software format agnostic. CVMFS can distribute anything in file format, including containers, modules, and (in theory) virtual environments (see https://confluence.skatelescope.org/display/SRCSC/OLI+61-63+Software+Distribution+Technologies for an overview of software distribution technologies).
In the SRCNet, Harbor has been tested as a container registry. A prototype science platform in the MiniSRCNet demonstrator (based on CANFAR) also uses a container registry to deploy software and provide users with an interactive session for executing their code.
The objective of this feature is to work with a greater variety of software formats when distributing and deploying software (in particular, modules and virtual environments in addition to containers). One goal of this feature will be to validate the CVMFS PoCs developed by Tangerine and Olive.
