CARTA is a visualisation and analysis tool that offers advanced exploratory data analysis features and efficient handling of datasets up to terabyte scale. Despite this, relatively little prototyping work within the SRCNet has been done with CARTA, particularly in terms of integrating with the DDM prototypes. With CANFAR offering a means of launching CARTA sessions for users, with RSE data staged (read-only), we can test this out as a PoC, and use what we learn to inform the CARTA development roadmap.

    Description

One of the key advantages of CANFAR science platform over e.g. JupyterHub is the ability to launch generic containers as user sessions. Now that CANFAR can view data managed at a local RSE (following https://jira.skatelescope.org/browse/SP-3729) it ought to be possible to launch on-demand CARTA sessions to visualise images within the Rucio DDM.

A caveat to this is locating the file PFN on the attached volume, which would likely be manual initially, though it may be possible to partly automate this. This could inform feature suggestions for the CARTA roadmap, such as enabling IVOA DataLink lookup for opening files.
