We need to understand the current networking architecture in the UK as a basis of making our plans on how to develop the infrastructure in order to comply with new standards (e.g. IPv6) and the SRCnet's requirements. This work is needed now since it will inform how we develop our future infrastructure. It is primarily a priority at the national level, but leasons learnt will be useful more widely.

    Description

Work with and survey all UK sites to better understand their current networking infrastructure and to plan their their future development.

This work is necessary in order that all UKSRC sites understand the network flows between end points servers and the possible bottlenecks (firewalls , links not at 100G, servers that are physical vs VMs etc). This work should be prioritised since it will identify potential points of congestion that have a long lead time to upgrade.

      Definitions:

The Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) is an independent network that acts as a buffer zone between an external network and the internal network.

Data Transfer Node (DTN) :  dedicated systems (typically but not always Linux servers) deployed and configured specifically for transferring data over networks.

Jisc -  The UK digital, data and technology agency focused on tertiary education, research and innovation.

Janet is a high-speed network for the UK research and education community provided by Jisc, a not-for-profit company set up to provide computing support for education. JANET - Wikipedia
