Monitoring of Tango devices is critical to observability within the SKA control system that spans all software subsystems and doing this calls for a flexible, extensible and well-engineered UI solution for building dashboards for engineers and operators.

Taranta is the current leading solution for UI development for interfacing with Tango devices but is know to have a number of design flaws and technical debt issues that could make future support of this for SKA use a challenge and starting development of a new solution that can be used and supported for the duration of SKA commissioning and into operations is therefore of high value and should be started as soon as possible if we are to avoid sinking a lot of effort into working with the current implementation.

Before beginning a major development effort, further design exploration has been determined to be valuable to better identify the effort needed to develop a revised solution for Tango monitoring with Taranta.

Should follow acceptance criteria from SP-2712.

This needs further discussion at PI planning! As noted in the comments on SP-2712, the acceptance criteria are arguably too up-front design-heavy. Rather than focusing entirely on design and architectural work, we should ideally aim to also deliver a simple demo of an early prototype or proof of concept that gives stakeholders confidence that we have a solution we can continue to develop and evolve into a production code.

    Description

DP ART Contribution to SP-2712. Follows work in PI15 on SP-2612.

As recently discussed it might also be worth revisiting adopting a solution like Grafana instead and leveraging widgets in that framework with a TangoGQL data source (perhaps continuing work started here: https://gitlab.com/ska-telescope/TANGO-grafana)?)

Note the component / PBS item is set to COM TMC software but this product spans multiple subsystems; COM TMC software is just currently considered to be the closest match.
