Accurate simulations allow meaningful conclusions to be drawn. Atmospheres have traditionally been treated as highly simplistic models. Ionospheric models are now believed to be sufficient, but > ~4GHz the troposphere will dominate.

      1) assess the simulation tool and identify any potential shortcomings and possible enhancements

      2)  test possible calibration approaches/requirements mentioned in points 1 and 2 in the description based on DD tropospheric contaminated data generated by RASCIL

For plots and discussion of simulations see YAN-866.

      Conclusions:

      1) Documentation for simulations needs to be improved. Particularly on resourcing.

      2) On whether the simulations are of a sufficient quality?
      That depends on the purpose.
If it is to demonstrate the success of DD correction methods with independent lines of sight. I think yes
If `smoothness' over solution directions are invoked to regulise the results and achieve convergence. I think no

    Description

Rascil uses package ARatmospy for tropospheric model support.

ARatmospy generates a FITS cube of stacked phase screens with the power-scaling law supplied and for a specified turbulence strength. Inputs are exposure time, cadence, alpha magnitude, number of subapertures across the wavefront sensor and resolution of the output phase screen.

The addition of realistic models to RASCIL/OSKAR or other simulation packages should allow:

      1. Sensible decisions on directional dependent and temporal self-calibration strategies: i.e. cycle times and spatial coverage, with impact on computing resources.
      2. Investigation of phase-referencing strategies:  i.e. real-time DD corrections for beam formation for pulsar and VLBI & the number of VLBI beams required as a function of the required astrometric precision for target frequencies.
