Description
This is to describe and to decide upon the architectural issues associated with using Time in the control system.
SP-229 and the related SP-249 discussed a few aspects of the time architecture and implementation for the SKA1 telescopes, but were never pulled. Some architectural descisions need to be made (the topic of SP-229) before implmentation, hence now this has become an ADR.
The key issues to cover are:
- How to represent time in various user-facing artefacts;
- Synchronising time across the various telescope systems;
- Integrating with the SKA1 time distribution system;
- Ensuring the ability to observe continuously across leap-seconds;
- How to test.
Why Now? Various: discussions on-going on timed commands, system maturity, removal of long-standing, but not pulled, feature from backlog.
Scope: Almost all of TMC, possibly some OSO and SDP?
Quality: Performance, Scalability, Testability
