Description
Who?
SKA developers, SKA system scientists, SKAO Science Team
What?
We require an on-boarded atmospheric generator that can work with existing SKA1 MID and LOW simulations which will become a SKA supported package/function in future. This could focus on (but is not limited to) providing an updated and supported version of ARatmospy and should take into consideration the recent work in SP-2159 assessing the suitability of the RASCIL-based usage of ARatmospy and address the limitations found.
This is also likely needed for SKA1 LOW simulations with OSKAR being worked on in association with the EoR Science Data Challenge.
Why?
Effective and accurate simulated data is important for testing pipelines developed within SDP. Specifically, the inclusion of expected atmospheric effects is necessary to test correction for direction-dependent effects. This capability is also required by scientists currently developing future Epoch of Reionisation SKA science data challenges and presents an opportunity to support this effort and benefit from immediate user feedback.
Notes:
Onboard an atmospheric generator that can work with existing SKA1 MID and LOW simulations and that will become a SKA supported package/function in future.
Could be developed as an SDP Processing Function?
Could just fork ARatmospy and address technical debt (doc, packaging, Python 2 calls etc) but we should explore other options too. NB ARatmospy github repository has no license information, and it seems we do not have information on this from other routes either. So any fork of this should first establish the copyright and licensing rights.
This is needed effectively ~now (end of PI13) for use in simulations being developed for the EoR science data challenge and will be needed fairly soon for new data sets for testing SDP pipelines with DDEs as well.
Previous simulations using ARatomospy are now no longer really a viable solution given this package is not supported and is not even close to meeting SKA software standards.
